WELCOME! to my website and thank you for stopping by.
I am Lorna DeMott and was born and lived the first half of my life in Glasgow, Scotland before venturing over here to the US to make this my home from home. I have always loved art and admit it was the only subject in high school that I actually enjoyed. Impressionism was my first love and I would pore over my books memorizing the artist to their paintings. I was very fortunate to go to The Louvre in Paris when I was 15 and I was completely in heaven because they have a whole wing for Impressionism.
Over the years I have developed my creative skills in many different ways including crochet (I love yarn!!), sewing, cake decorating, woodwork and furniture renovation. A couple of years ago I started experimenting with acrylic paint pouring but my attention was soon drawn to the creative possibilities of using epoxy resin.
Working with resin certainly has its challenges and I'm constantly reminded of how unpredictable it can be and that I really don't have full control of the final outcome. Many factors play a part as to how the resin will behave during manipulation, and this is all part of the excitement I feel with each piece. Temperature, humidity and pigments used to tint the resin, placement and layering of the resin, and even the substrate used can all play a part in orchestrating the end result.
The preparation of the materials for resin painting can be lengthy and laborious, however I find the growing anticipation during this process is half of the fun. Once I have all my color mixed, canvas and heat gun at the ready, and am finally able to start pouring color - I am truly excited.
As I continue in my art journey my overall goal is to create movement with color and attempt to capture the images that I see in my head. My work is abstract and I would like to work on a negative space series, but sometimes I can't help myself by pouring on more color. My next acrylic series is going to be an "I Am" series. You'll have to come back to check it out as I progress.
I am excited to announce that as of January 2019, I'm now a juried member of the Arches Gallery at the Workhouse Art Center in Lorton VA. The Arches Gallery is a co-op of about 20-25 local artists who share the gallery space to showcase their works. We are a very varied and interesting group with many talents including painting, ceramics, jewelry, photography and mixed media. I have anywhere from 4 - 7 pieces hung there, and for sale, every month. I am working towards being the 'featured artist' which would mean I would have up to four walls to fill, so I've got a lot of work to do before that happens. I hope to feature early 2020 so I'll keep you posted here.
